The holidays are a perfect time to reconnect with old colleagues, strengthen existing relationships, and release the ones that no longer serve you. Use these three steps to cultivate a network that sets the stage for a successful new year.

Review your network. List your contacts from LinkedIn, social media, and your phone. Sort them into three categories: Active, Infrequent, and Lost. Highlight relationships you want to nurture, and consider stepping back from those that no longer feel mutual or meaningful. Prioritizing who truly adds value to your personal and professional life will help you focus your energy where it counts.

Reignite old connections. Opt for a simple, thoughtful message, referencing a shared experience or mutual connection to make it personal. For example, “I saw your post about your new business—congrats! Let’s catch up soon.” Taking this first step can feel intimidating, but most people appreciate the effort (and may have even been meaning to reconnect, too).

Nurture for the long term. Reconnecting is only the first step. Consistent follow-ups—like quarterly lunches, occasional emails, or even a quick note on a special occasion—turn one-off conversations into lasting relationships. Trust grows with time, effort, and genuine care, forming bonds that can provide unexpected opportunities and support over time.
