Leading a team with diverse views and identities can be challenging, especially when unconscious bias shapes interactions. Fortunately, thanks to the brain’s neuroplasticity, biases can be unlearned. Here are five strategies to help your team reduce bias and collaborate better.

Mindfulness. Encourage a “mindful minute” before meetings. This pause helps team members become aware of any stereotypical or harmful assumptions they might be making, promoting thoughtful, intentional decision-making.

Stereotype replacement. When a stereotype comes to your mind, consciously recognize it and replace it with a fact-based, positive counterexample. This helps weaken the hold of learned associations and reduces bias in your future interactions.

Individuation. Get to know each person’s unique qualities. The prompt “tell me more” breaks down assumptions and fosters deeper understanding. It also boosts communication by helping others feel valued.

Prosocial behavior. Promote compassion by encouraging team members to silently wish others well before meetings. This fosters empathy, reduces stress, and builds trust in the workplace.

Perspective-taking. Invite your team to consider situations from others’ viewpoints. This practice boosts empathy and enhances collaboration, helping teams work more effectively across diverse backgrounds.
