Differences in perspective can help your team make better decisions, solve problems, and adapt. But when people interpret the same situation differently, tension can quickly replace collaboration. As the team leader, your response determines whether those differences create value or erode trust. Watch for these four traps.

Certainty. When you become convinced that your interpretation is the only correct one, you can shut down useful debate. Pause and ask what information, experience, or perspective you may be missing. Focus on understanding your team before deciding who is right.

Inconsistency. Your credibility as a leader weakens when your actions do not match the values you promote. Compare what you say matters with what you reward, prioritize, and model. When there is a gap, acknowledge it and correct it.

Emotional reactivity. Team members can interpret the same event very differently. Avoid dismissing their reactions as irrational or excessive. Slow the conversation down, ask what is driving the response, and listen without judgment.

Justification. Explaining your behavior can prevent you from examining it. Notice when you are defending a choice, avoiding a difficult conversation, or shifting blame. Ask what you could have handled differently, then address the issue directly.
