When you’re not completely happy in your job, it can be difficult to decide that enough is enough, especially in a tumultuous economy. What are the signs that it’s time to quit—even in an uncertain landscape? Here are red flags to watch out for.

* The environment is toxic. Ask yourself: Is my work hampering my mental health, disrupting my sleep, or negatively impacting my relationships? Do I feel talked down to or disrespected? If you feel powerless and unable to remedy the situation, that’s a sign that you may need to leave.

* Your values are being violated. Identify what’s truly important to you, in both your personal and professional life. If your job inherently compromises these values, start looking for the next one.

* Your skills aren’t being used and developed. Think about the competencies you have and the ones you’ll need to develop to advance your career. Is your role helping you reinforce your skills and learn new ones, or are you stagnant? If there’s no upward trajectory and you’re seeking growth, sticking around might be a waste of time.
