Large-scale layoffs are, regrettably, a fact of life in business. As a leader, it’s critical that you deliver the painful message to your company with compassion and respect. Start by explaining the rationale behind the decision. This should be a clear, honest, and compelling clarification of why the layoffs are necessary, the broader business context that led to the decision, and other actions the business has taken. Next, include a succinct summary of what people need to know, with special emphasis on what’s being done for dismissed employees. There also should be a forward-looking vision for how this action positively positions the company going forward, as well as a high-level outline of any planned changes in strategy or organizational structure. Finally, be sure that all of your messaging is consistent across the entire company. Layoffs are painful, but empathetic communication can help reduce the negative impacts on both departing employees and those who remain.
