As a manager, creating an environment where new hires feel they truly belong is essential—especially when they know they weren’t your first choice for the job. Here’s how you can make them feel comfortable and valued from day one.

Introduce them with purpose. When welcoming a new team member, highlight the specific strengths and skills that made them stand out. Let your team know how you see these qualities contributing to upcoming projects.

Incorporate their ideas early. Schedule regular check-ins with your new hire and actively implement their suggestions. This will not only boost their confidence but also foster a sense of psychological safety.

Facilitate connections. Help them bond with their colleagues in meaningful ways. Introduce them to mentors or peer groups and encourage them to have informal conversations with their new coworkers.

Share your own journey. Be open about your own career challenges. Offering your story can build trust and help your new hire feel that you’re invested in their growth.
