Working for an indecisive leader can be frustrating, but you’re not powerless. Here are five strategies to help you maintain momentum even when your boss keeps changing direction.

Give a “tee-up.” Before diving into the details, remind your boss of the project’s context and goals. This keeps them grounded and less likely to derail the conversation with last-minute changes.

Ask specific questions. Asking “What do you think?” will invite endless revisions. Instead, focus their feedback on specific aspects of the project, like timelines or major milestones.

Set editing boundaries. Define a clear “weigh-in” period. Remind your boss that feedback is needed by a certain date to hit deadlines and avoid costly delays.

Politely push back. It’s okay to challenge constant changes. Ask if the requested edit will truly impact the outcome and if it’s worth the time investment.

Check your resistance. Sometimes, change is necessary. If every tweak triggers anxiety, reflect on your own adaptability. Progress often requires flexibility.
